Tombstone of Fireflies
Ryoko Shinohara | Ayano Shiraishi | Tsutomu Tatsumi | Akemmi Yamaguchi

From the studio that brought us Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away comes the classic anime, Grave of the Fireflies. Set in post-war Japan, only a few weeks before the American occupation, director Isao Takahata's powerful anti-war masterpiece centers on the lives of two brave siblings, a fourteen year old boy named Seita and his four year old sister, Setsuko. With their father away serving in the imperial navy and their mother tragically killed in an air raid, the two children are forced to stay with their aunt, a cruel woman who proves to be a poor caregiver for the two children. After quarreling with their aunt, the two siblings leave the city and venture out on their own, eventually taking up residence in a cave-turned-abandoned bomb shelter. With no adults to turn to, the youngsters must depend solely on each other to survive. But it isn't long before their resources are exhausted, and Seita is forced into stealing so he can feed the starving Setsuko. And sadly, it seems his little sister is getting weaker by the moment. These dark times are illuminated only by the light of the fireflies.

Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka, this Studio Ghibli-produced film has been universally hailed as a classic since its 1988 release. The emotionally charged motion picture highlights the suffering endured by the innocent victims of war, a stunning portrayal that has resonated with audiences worldwide. Ultimately, Grave of the Fireflies is an unforgettable film, sure to bring even the most jaded audience to tears with its poignant tale of the horrors of war, and the children left behind in its wake. ~from yesasia~

Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
Ogata Megumi | Mitsuishi Kotono | Hayashibara Megumi | Yamguchi Yuriko

Neon Genesis Evangelion is back - not that it ever really went anywhere. Since the original 26-episode TV series premiered in the mid-nineties, the anime's legend has only continued to grow, amounting to a small industry of manga, DVDs, action figures, model kits, and other merchandise that remains popular with anime fans worldwide. The series eventually hit the big screen, with a trilogy of films released in 1997, summarizing and capping off the series, but creator Anno Hideaki is not done with Evangelion yet. With a revamped storyline and additional, improved animation, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone brings the series back to the big screen, leading off an ambitious teratology of films dubbed Rebuild of Evangelion.

Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not Alone) retells roughly the first six episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, including Shinji Ikari's reunion with his estranged father, Gendo Ikari, and Shinji's introduction to EVA-01, the giant robot he's destined to pilot. Key characters Misato Katsuragi and Rei Ayanami are introduced, and viewers are given their first taste of the series' famously deep storyline, which mixes science fiction, war, psychology, theology, and existentialism into a single compelling work. Evangelion is famous for delivering not one, but two separate endings via the television series and the theatrical film End of Evangelion, and fandom has long been divided on which, if any of the endings truly fits the series. Creator-director Anno has the rare chance to return to his work a third time to deliver yet another possible ending to the saga, but Anno also promises that this new work will be accessible and enjoyable for both new and old Evangelion fans. ~from yesasia~
