KIDS - Kizuna

KIDS - Kizuna

Kuriyama Chiaki Izumiya Shigeru Tamaki Hiroshi Saito Yuki

WaT's Koike Teppei (Lovely Complex) and Nodame Cantabile's Tamaki Hiroshi star in the highly anticipated new film Kids. After successfully adapting the main story from renowned writer Otsuichi's best-selling light novel series Kimi ni Shika Kikoenai to film in early 2007, director Hagishima Tatsuya brings the novel's second story Kids to the big screen with an even more photogenic cast and heartrending narrative. From Kimi ni Shika Kikoenai to Waiting in the Dark, Otsuichi's works are known for their acute depictions of pain and loneliness, and Kids again hits the heart with the story of three friends walking a long and lonely road of suffering and healing. Other than the fan service pairing of Koike Teppei and Tamaki Hiroshi, Kids also co-stars popular actress Kuriyama Chiaki (Kill Bill).

On the outside, tough scrap yard worker Takeo (Tamaki Hiroshi) seems to have nothing in common with the innocent, almost childlike Asato (Koike Teppei), but both are lonely souls bearing dark pasts. Crossing paths by chance, Takeo, Asato, and shy diner waitress Shiho (Kuriyama Chiaki) strike up an unlikely friendship, making life in their dead-end hometown a bit more bearable. Asato was born with special powers that prove to be both his blessing and his curse: he has the ability to transfer other people's wounds to his own body. He can't help but try to heal those around him, including Takeo and Shiho, but his powers come at a painful cost. Asato's powers tore apart his family years ago and continue to tear at him in the present. With Asato determined to hurt himself to help others, Takeo may be the only one who can save his friend. ~from yesasia~

Shimizu Hiroshi Collection - Part 2 Kodomo No Shiki (Four Seasons of Children)
Ida Choko Miura Mitsuko Kasatomi Shu Shimizu Hiroshi (Director)

Kodomo no Shiki is the second boxset release in the Shimizu Hiroshi Collection. This four-disc boxset comes with four of Shimizu's representative films: Children in the Wind (1937), Nobuko (1940), Mikaheri no Tou (1941), and Four Seaons of Children (1939), which is only being released with this boxset as a bonus feature.

One of the undisputed masters of Japan cinema, Shimizu Hiroshi (1903-1966) made well over 100 films in his career, ranging from children's films to lighthearted comedies to stories from the fringe. His outstanding cinematic achievements match that of contemporary great and lifelong friend Ozu Yasujiro, though the latter has eclipsed him in recognition. Shimizu Hiroshi is particularly well known for his children's films, but his steady stream of output for Shochiku from the 1920s to 1950s yielded a far wider selection of films, many of which have been sadly lost to time. In comparison to Ozu's films which are readily available, Shimizu's works have been near impossible to find outside of the festival circuit, but Shochiku is now finally releasing Shimizu's films on DVD with English subtitles. ~from yesasia~

L change the WorLd - Complete Set
Matsuyama Kenichi Kudoh Youki Fukuda Mayuko Hiraizumi Sei

L returns to the big screen in the blockbuster Death Note spin-off L change the WorLd! Stealing the show with his performance in the two Death Note films, Matsuyama Kenichi reprises his fan-favorite role as the quirky genius detective with a sweet tooth and thick eyeliner. Directed by Nakata Hideo of Ring and Dark Water fame, L change the WorLd revolves around the last 23 days of L's life, shedding new light into the inner world of the awkward and endearing prodigy as he embarks on his final adventure. Though the film does reference elements from Ohba Tsugumi's manga including the school for the gifted that trained L and other one-letter detectives, the story itself is developed from an original screenplay. Running at leisurely pace on offbeat humor, L change the WorLd leaves behind the Death Note plot device in favor of more character development and screen time for everyone's favorite barefooted detective. Watch L as he chews sugar cubes, rides a bike, makes new friends, saves the day, and maybe even stands up straight!

With only 23 days left to live, L (Matsuyama Kenichi) burns the remaining Death Note and proceeds to work day and night solving as many cases and consuming as many sweets as possible. One final case is sent his way in the form of a Thai boy who alone survived a deadly virus outbreak in his village. L gets another guest when 12-year-old girl Maki (Fukuda Mayuko, Little DJ) shows up on the doorstep. Both children are connected to an Ebola-influenza virus developed by Maki's father which has been stolen by terrorists. With the terrorists hunting for Maki and threatening to unleash the virus, L is forced to leave his chair and venture out into the real world, both children in stow. The days tick down as L rushes to develop an antidote and catch the terrorists before time runs out. ~from yesasia~

Sukiyaki Western - Django
Sato Koichi Ito Hideaki Iseya Yusuke Ando Masanobu

An English-language remake of Sergio Corbucci's classic 1966 western Django set in historical Japan, starring Japanese actors with questionable grasp of English? If anyone could pull it off, it'd be Miike Takashi! A crazy offering even by Miike standards, the deliriously entertaining Sukiyaki Western - Django had camp cult classic stamped all over it from day one, and the cast and crew deliver with straight-faced, winking exuberance. The film is set amidst a fusion mishmash of dusty hills and painted backdrops, cowboy hats and Japanese period costume, providing an appropriate environment for the looney tunes genius of Miike. Bombastic action and copious, inventive bloodshed are present and accounted for, but the violence is more of the terrifically entertaining variety of Ryo Ga Gotoku than the stomach-turning feats from his Ichi the Killer days.

It helps of course that Sukiyaki Western - Django features a veritable who's who's list of talented actors: Ito Hideaki (Umizaru), Sato Koichi (What the Snow Brings), Iseya Yusuke (Casshern), Ando Masanobu (Big Bang Love, Juvenile A), Oguri Shun (The Neighbor No. 13), and vetarans Ishibashi Renji and Momoi Kaori. There's even a spot for fanboy-cum-director Quentin Tarantino, who gives a surprisingly good performance in his narrating role. Most of the Japanese cast learned their lines phonetically, and drawl them out with fragmented flair, adding to the camp value of the film. Comprehension is not guaranteed, but entertainment is heaped out in big, hearty servings.

After centuries of war, the rival Heike and Genji clans have been reduced to little more than scrappy gangs of ill-kempt stragglers. The Heike led by hot-tempered Kiyomori (Sato Koichi) and the Genji led by criminally cool Yoshitsune (Iseya Yusuke) both catch wind that there's gold to be found in the small, remote town of Yuta. Showdown in little Yuta is inevitable when both clans come rolling into town at the same time. Joining the fray is a mysterious, nameless cowboy (Ito Hideaki) with the fastest guns in the west. Both clans are eager to enlist the ronin into their ranks, but he will only offer his services to the highest bidder. ~from yesasia~

Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
Ogata Megumi Mitsuishi Kotono Hayashibara Megumi Yamguchi Yuriko

Neon Genesis Evangelion is back - not that it ever really went anywhere. Since the original 26-episode TV series premiered in the mid-nineties, the anime's legend has only continued to grow, amounting to a small industry of manga, DVDs, action figures, model kits, and other merchandise that remains popular with anime fans worldwide. The series eventually hit the big screen, with a trilogy of films released in 1997, summarizing and capping off the series, but creator Anno Hideaki is not done with Evangelion yet. With a revamped storyline and additional, improved animation, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone brings the series back to the big screen, leading off an ambitious teratology of films dubbed Rebuild of Evangelion.

Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not Alone) retells roughly the first six episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, including Shinji Ikari's reunion with his estranged father, Gendo Ikari, and Shinji's introduction to EVA-01, the giant robot he's destined to pilot. Key characters Misato Katsuragi and Rei Ayanami are introduced, and viewers are given their first taste of the series' famously deep storyline, which mixes science fiction, war, psychology, theology, and existentialism into a single compelling work. Evangelion is famous for delivering not one, but two separate endings via the television series and the theatrical film End of Evangelion, and fandom has long been divided on which, if any of the endings truly fits the series. Creator-director Anno has the rare chance to return to his work a third time to deliver yet another possible ending to the saga, but Anno also promises that this new work will be accessible and enjoyable for both new and old Evangelion fans. ~from yesasia~

The Glorious Team Batista
Takeuchi Yuko Abe Hiroshi Ikeuchi Hiroyuki Kikkawa Koji

Team Batista, Japan's number one heart surgery team, has lost three consecutive patients on the operating table - and the cause may be murder! Based on a best-selling novel, The Glorious Team Batista follows a storied surgical team who perform the difficult "Batista Operation", a procedure that requires the heart to stop beating for a period of time. Takeuchi Yuko (Be With Me) and Abe Hiroshi (Bubble Fiction - Boom or Bust) lead the ensemble cast as the investigating duo who must determine if someone on Team Batista is killing their own patients - and if so, why? Glorious Team Batista combines elements of murder mystery and hospital drama, as the investigators struggle with medical ethics as well as the chilling motives that would drive someone on the most revered surgery team in Japan to take human lives. Glorious Team Batista is - quite literally - a heart-stopping medical thriller, but the star performances from the comely Takeuchi and most especially the charismatic Abe Hiroshi help alleviate the suspense.

The "Batista Operation" is an innovative surgical procedure on the human heart that's quite risky - but Tojo University Hospital's crack team is working on a streak of over twenty successful operations in a row, earning them the title "Glorious Team Batista". But when a number of their patients die on the operating table, suspicions are aroused. The hospital asks internal investigator Taguchi (Takeuchi Yuko) to take a look at the 7-member team, and while she does uncover a complex web of clashing personalities and shifty motivations, she doesn't truly see anything amiss. Enter national health ministry official Shiratori (Abe Hiroshi), who strides into Tojo and orders Taguchi to reopen her investigation. He believes that murder is definitely on the agenda, and proceeds to run amok all over the hospital to prove his point. It's a point well taken, as the casualties continue even with Taguchi and Shiratori on the watch, butting heads all the while. With the reputation of the hospital on the line, will Taguchi and Shiratori be able to put their differences aside and determine which member of the Glorious Team Batista is, in fact, a murderer? ~ from yesasia~

Yoshinaga Sayuri Yamada Yoji (Director) Shida Mirai Sato Miku

After the success of his "Samurai Trilogy", renowned director Yamada Yoji draws acclaim and accolades once more with the wartime drama Kabei - Our Mother. Based on Nogami Teruyo's memoirs, Kabei follows a normal, loving family as their innocent, bustling lives are forever transformed by the war.
