Woody Allen's breezy new romantic comedy deals with two young American women and their amorous escapades in Barcelona, one of the most romantic cities in the world.
Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) are best friends, but completely different attitudes toward love. Vicky is reasonable and engaged in a respectable young man. Cristina is sexually and emotionally uninhibited, perpetually in search of a passion that will sweep her off her feet.
When Judy (Patricia Clarkson) and Mark (Kevin Dunn), distant relatives of Vicky, offer to host during a summer in Barcelona, two of them eagerly accept: Vicky wants to spend his last months as a single woman doing research for The captains, and Cristina are looking for a change of scenery to flee the psychic remnants of his last break.
One night in an art gallery, Cristina, true to form, instantly locks eyes in the most provocative and intense man in the room, Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), a handsome painter. Cristina is just more intrigue when Judy whispers that Juan Antonio had an explosive relationship with his ex-wife Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz) that one of them tried to kill the others. Later that night, when Vicky and Cristina are having dinner, Juan Antonio approaches your table with a brazen proposition: fly with him for a weekend trip to the provincial town of Oviedo, where he suggests studying the cultural wonders, drink good wine and making love together. Vicky believes that its proposal uncomfortable, but Cristina is delighted by its directness and charisma, Vicky and persuades her to accompany.
During a day of sightseeing and fine dining in Oviedo, Juan Antonio spoke in reverential terms about the wonderful Maria Elena, the great love of his life. Despite its profound sense, his passions ran too high for them to be together. Once, things got so catastrophic that Maria Elena stabbed him in a mad attack of jealousy.
That night, Juan Antonio invites the girls to his room-an offer flatly refuses Vicky and Cristina consents voluntarily. But just as Cristina and Juan Antonio are on the verge of falling into bed, Cristina becomes ill, and that is Vicky spent the rest of the weekend alone with him. Juan Antonio took Vicky to meet his father and opened his heart about his childhood and hopes his turbulent relationship with Maria Elena.
